VIN and chassis number check before you buy a car in Bangalore

The vehicle identification number (VIN), also called the chassis number, is the car’s identity. It is on a plate on the car, stamped into the body, and printed on the registration certificate. If those do not agree, nothing else about the car matters until someone explains why. This page covers what to compare, what a mismatch means, and what an inspection adds.

What to compare, and where

You need three things to agree before you pay:

  • The VIN plate on the car, and the number stamped into the body shell
  • The chassis number on the registration certificate (RC) and in the government Vahan record
  • On a new car, the VIN on the invoice and on Form 22, which the dealer hands over at delivery

What an inspection checks

Our inspector photographs the VIN plate and the odometer as part of the baseline record, and checks the plate and its rivets for signs of tampering: drilled or replaced rivets, a plate that sits proud, scratched or re-stamped characters. We read the registration record for ownership, loan (hypothecation) status, insurance and pollution certificate, and check that the car in front of us is the car on the papers. On a new car, matching the VIN to the invoice and Form 22 is the first item on the delivery checklist in our report.

What a VIN check cannot tell you

A matching VIN proves identity, not condition. It will not show an accident repair, a repaint, or a wound-back odometer. Those come from paint-thickness readings, the service record and the car itself. In one recent used-car report, the VIN plate was clean and every document agreed, and the car still had seven repainted panels and an accident repair in its service book.

If the numbers do not match

Stop. A VIN that does not match the RC, or a plate with signs of tampering, can mean a replaced body shell, a car assembled from parts of others, or a stolen vehicle carrying another car’s identity. There is no discount that makes that safe to buy. Ask the seller to explain in writing, and walk away if they cannot.

Frequently asked questions

Is the VIN the same as the chassis number in India?

On modern cars, yes. The 17-character VIN is what the registration certificate records as the chassis number.

Can I check a car’s registration details myself?

Yes. The government Vahan record, through the Parivahan website or the mParivahan app, shows registration details for a number. Compare what it shows with the car and the RC.

Does a clean VIN mean the car was never in an accident?

No. The VIN proves which car it is, not what has happened to it. Accident repairs show up in paint-thickness readings, the service record and the bodywork.
