Used car service history check in Bangalore (Bengaluru)

The service book is the one record of a car that the seller did not write for the sale. It records the kilometres at every visit, every warranty claim, and often the accident repairs nobody mentions. Read closely, it answers questions a test drive never will.

What a service record told one buyer

A 2022 Jeep Compass with seven dealer entries, all at one authorised workshop in Bengaluru. Read in order, the book showed:

  • A body repair at 1,241 km, five weeks after delivery: the right front fender replaced with its brackets and moulding
  • A check-engine light at 16,944 km, with the coolant tank and battery replaced under warranty
  • Brake discs resurfaced at 29,230 km, which is why the worn discs we found could not be skimmed again
  • Sixteen months since the last visit, with the annual service overdue on time

How the book catches a wound-back odometer

Kilometres only go one way. In one car we inspected, the service record read 32,601 km in October 2019 and 9,957 km three months later at the same workshop: 22,644 km had disappeared. In another, a Maruti Eeco, the service history recorded 1,61,174 km while the engine scan read 86,273 km. The dashboard number was about 75,000 km short of the car’s own records.

What we read, and what we cannot

Where the manufacturer makes dealer-network records available, we read them against the odometer and the wear on the car. Not every brand does, and cars serviced at independent garages leave gaps in the official record. When there is no history to read, the report says so plainly rather than filling the space with guesses, and the physical inspection has to carry more of the weight.

No service history is not an automatic no

Plenty of honest owners use a local garage and keep no paperwork. What matters is whether the car’s condition agrees with the story: pedal and seat wear against the claimed kilometres, the state of the oil and coolant, the tyre dates, and whether the seller can produce any invoices at all. Price the uncertainty in, and inspect harder.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a car’s service history myself?

Ask the seller for the service book and invoices. The brand’s authorised dealer can usually print the history for the registered owner, so a genuine seller can get it for you.

Does the inspection report check for odometer tampering?

Where service records exist, we compare the kilometres recorded at each visit with the odometer and the engine scan, and flag any reading that goes backwards or does not fit the car’s wear.

Should I avoid a car with no service history?

Not necessarily. Check that the car’s wear agrees with its claimed kilometres, and treat the missing history as a reason to inspect harder and pay less.
