What a car inspection report contains, and real ones to read

A report is only as useful as the order it puts things in. A list of 260 ticks with one line about the brakes buried at item 190 protects no one. Ours opens with what matters most and ends with every checkpoint, so you can read the first two pages in the car park and the rest at home. Seven real reports are published, anonymised, so you can judge for yourself before you book.

What is in it, in the order you read it

Every report follows the same structure, so two cars can be compared side by side:

  • Summary and score, with a plain verdict and what the score does and does not mean
  • What we found, most important first; a safety issue is never listed as a bargaining chip
  • Area ratings across 11 areas, from paint and bodywork to gearbox and transmission
  • Paint thickness on every measurable panel, and which panels read as repainted
  • A damage map, tyre condition with tread depth and rubber age, and the periodic maintenance due
  • Service history and registration records, where they exist
  • Every checkpoint with its answer, and a list of what we could not check and why

Read a real used-car report

A 2022 Jeep Compass with 35,368 km: brakes worn to metal, seven panels repainted, an accident repair in the service book at 1,241 km and a timing belt due on age. The report tells the buyer not to drive it home until the brakes are done, and why the score alone would have misled them.

Read a real new-car PDI report

A new Skoda Kylaq with 4 km on the clock: paint original and consistent on every panel, tyres made in 2026, one scratch on the front right A-pillar. The report ends with the eight things the buyer should confirm at handover, before signing the delivery note.

What we remove before publishing a report

The samples on this site carry no owner name, phone number, address, registration number, VIN, engine number, lender name or dealer name, and no photographs, because a number plate can be read from almost any angle. Dates are shown to the month. The findings, measurements and checkpoints are exactly as recorded. Your own report is yours alone and is never published.

Frequently asked questions

How soon do I get the report?

The same day, as a digital report you can open on your phone and share as a PDF.

Does the report include photos?

Yes, your report includes the photographs taken during the inspection. The public samples on this site leave them out to protect the owners’ number plates.

Can I show the report to the seller?

Yes. Many buyers do, because it turns a haggle into a conversation about specific findings, each with a photo and a measurement behind it.
